Alexander Voitsekhovsky was born in Moscow in 1964. He lives in St Petersburg. As a child, he started accompanying geologists and archaeologists on field trips. Following in the steps of other members of his family, he studied medicine before working as an emergency-services doctor for the next ten years.
He began drawing when he was a student – without any serious intent, simply to amuse himself and his friends and acquaintances.
His first exhibition, which took place in St Petersburg in 1994, was organized by close friends. It was followed by a second and a third… In 2003, after the publication of his book My Never-ending Friend and the exhibitions to which it led, Alexxander made art his main occupation.
Voitsekhovsky has illustrated Dostoevky’s White Nights, Pushkin’s Tales of Belkin, and children’s verses by Hilaire Belloc. His book A Whale off the Coast of Norway was published by Fontanka in London in 2016.
He has designed the set for a production of My Lermontov and decorated the facade of Upsala Circus in St Petersburg.
Exhibitions of work by Alexander Voitsekhovsky have been held in St Petersburg, Moscow, Omsk, Kyzyl, Ferapontovo, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Geneva, London, Berlin, Freiburg, New York, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Kobe, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv.
Works by Alexander Voitsekhovky have been exhibited at the Anna Akhmatova Museum at Fountain House in St Petersburg, at the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis, at the Circus exhibition at the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, at The Creation of the Book exhibition at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg and are to be found in many private collections.
